engineering as a career

The branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial application to fulfill social and consumer needs.

Engineering is one of the most common career choices in India and IITs and NITs are among the most prestigious engineering colleges and have a long history of setting the benchmark in research and producing some of the country’s finest engineers imparting their expertise in all fields around the world. There are also many state and private colleges in India that provide world-class facilities and opportunities for young science students.

what do engineers do?

Many engineers develop new products. To do this, they have to consider several factors. For example, in developing an industrial robot, engineers specify the functional requirements precisely, design and test components to produce the final design, and evaluate the design’s overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. This process applies to the development of many different products, such as chemicals, computers, power plants, helicopters, and toys. Many engineers also work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine the causes of a component’s failure, and test manufactured products to maintain the quality. They also estimate the time and cost required to complete projects. Supervisory engineers are responsible for major components or entire projects. Engineers use computers extensively to produce and analyze designs; to stimulate and test how a machine, structure, or system operates; to generate specifications for parts; to monitor the quality of products; and to control the efficiency of processes.

Engineering Entrance Exams In India (IIT-JEE Main & Advanced)

Engineering Entrance Exams have always been the hot choice for millions of higher secondary students, who dream to pursue attractive careers in Engineering. Most of the National as well as State Level Engineering Entrance Tests like Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for IITs, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and for other State Engineering Colleges in India are held in the months of April / May for the academic year starting from July / August of the following year.

The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India has entrusted the responsibility of conducting Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Main) to the NTA. This Examination was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) till 2018. From 2019 onwards, JEE (Main) will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The test will be conducted in two attempts as JEE (Main) I conducted in the month of January & JEE (Main) II in the month of April in CBT mode.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is only an examination conducting body. After declaration of result, the data will be handed over to Centralised Seat Allocation Board (CSAB)/JoSAA or the concerned State Government/Institute for Seat Allocation Process and admission procedure.

Usually, the syllabus of the entrance tests is based on the NCERT courses outline of class XI and XII. The motto of almost all the entrance tests is to assess the fundamental concepts of Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics, and their varied applications. However in some specific entrance tests, questions are also asked on Mental Ability Test (MAT), English Proficiency, Logical Reasoning/ General Aptitude and Drawing etc.

By the direction of The HRD Ministry, Govt. of India JEE has been divided into two phases: JEE (Main) and IIT-JEE (Advanced)

JEE (Main) & IIT-JEE (Advanced)

JEE (Main)

A common entrance test for admission to undergraduate degree programs in NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes) and state level Engineering Colleges participating though Central Seat Allocation Board subject to the condition. Every year, more than 10 lakh students appear for this examination. Admissions to 30814 seats in B.Tech/B.E., B.Arch and B.Plan programmes offered by 31 NITs, 25 IIITs and 28 CFTIs will be on the basis of the ranks declared in the JEE Main result. JEE (Main) is also the qualifying test for admission to the undergraduate programs offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs).

IIT-JEE (Advanced)

IIT-JEE (Advanced) is the second stage examination of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Students who qualify JEE Main and is in top 2,50,000 candidates in order of merit becomes eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced. IIT Delhi will conduct JEE Advanced 2022. JEE Advanced is the exam for admissions to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programs (entry at the +2 level) in all the 23 IITs along with some CFTIs – Central Government funded technical institutions like IISc Bangalore and IISERs of the country. Also, the admission to various courses is based on the cutoff and number of seats available in an IIT which is different in different IITs. Around 11,279 undergraduate seats are filled every year through JEE Advanced.

Important updates for JEE Main 2021

For the first time JEE (Main) 2021 will be conducted in 4 phases by NTA for admissions in the next academic session. This will give multiple opportunities to the candidates to improve their scores in the examination if they are not able to give their best in one attempt. Also In the first attempt, the students will get a first-hand experience of taking an examination and will know their mistakes which they can improve while attempting for the next time. This will reduce the chances of dropping a year and waste a full year.

A candidate need not appear in all the four Sessions. However, if the candidate appears in more than one Session then his/her best of the 2021 NTA Scores will be considered for preparation of Merit List/ Ranking.
